Diablo 3 is Reaping Gamers’ Souls
After what seemed like countless years of hype at Blizzcon and other gaming expo’s Diablo 3 was finally released in May of 2012. Among being one of the most anticipated games of all time D3 became the fastest-selling PC game of all time, selling more than 3.5 million copies within the first 24 hours. Selling over 12 million copies in 2012, it also was the best selling game of the year. Due to this, PC gamers saw a rise in green lit PC games as companies recognized the potential in this wavering market. Even though critics and fans alike gave D3 rave reviews upon release it quickly came under scrutiny with the release of the real money auction house as well as the lack of PvP which both hindered the replay ability. There was even animosity between Diablo creator David Brevik who criticized the D3 team on their disappointing new edition to the franchise. This caused D3 director Jay
Wilson to lash out with a rather unprofessional response defending the the game against such ridicule.
Blizzard has been talking about an expansion since release day, and on March 25, 2014 Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls will be hitting shelves worldwide. This release comes with three flavors: Standard Edition for $39.99, Digital Deluxe Edition for $59.99, and for true fanboys the retail exclusive Collector’s Edition for $79.99 which comes with tons of goodies for the Blizzard whore in all of us. (Trust me I understand). While true PvP is not being introduced in this expansion as Blizzard is sticking with the Brawler mode it introduced in patch 1.0.7. In Reaper of Souls many of the issues that have plagued the game since release are being addressed in regards to replay ability by adding an Act V,
increasing the level cap to 70, new enemies, two new game modes, the new Crusader class, the Mystic artisan, among many more exciting features that will create a new end-game experience on the best gaming laptops out there. Also, Blizzard has stated that there will be a patch in March before the expansion that will do away with the auction house and will revamp the entire gear system. Among all the changes this one will most likely be the most applauded solving a year long issue that swayed many players away from the franchise.
Blizzard has really stacked the deck for this to be an impressive expansion to the Diablo franchise. And while I can’t expect the sales to mirror its initial release we will see in March whether Blizzard remains the players drug of choice and Reaper of Souls will be able to bring back the hardcore Diablo 3 gamers to the motherland.
