Square-Enix Also Thinks DiveKick is OP
This game has been a sleeper hit in the FGC for a couple of years now. It is a two button fighter which only includes two moves: Jump and Divekick. What started as a kickstarter campaign was quickly picked up by Iron Galaxy Studios which has turned this IP into a fighting game epidemic. The game has already been released on Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, and on PC through Steam. And was rumored to have been a Day One release for the PS4, however it was delayed.
This game has primarily a western following and Japanese players haven’t had a chance to experience the glory that is the game without going to international tournaments where it is featured. However, this is no longer the case. Square-Enix recently announced that they are publishing Divekick: Addition Edition and bringing this title to Japan for the first time.
Square-Enix is an odd publisher for this game as they don’t have many fighting games under the brand’s label and primarily produce RPG or Action/Adventure games. However, Iron Galaxy Studios’ DK will join other titles such as Stealth Inc: A Clone In The Dark Ultimate Edition in Square-Enix’s Extreme Edges program. This program was started in 2010 to bring more mature Western games to a new Japanese market. This allows Square-Enix to publish games in Japan that aren’t necessarily “Square-Enix” type of games i.e. Modern Warfare 2, etc.
One of the unique features of the two button game is the large two button controller that looks like something from Chuck-E-Cheese. It is unlikely that we will see a company develop the controller for the home console, especially for a game that only retails for $9.99. However, due to the simplicity of the controller (being only two buttons) it would be fun to see a cheap remake of the controller produced by some third party company to match the price point of the game.
While no actual release date was announced, Divekick: Addition Edition is scheduled to be released sometime this summer in Japan. A port is in the development for Playstation 4 and Xbox One titled DK: Addition Edition +, but no release date has been announced.
