How Nintendo Won E3 2014
Exclusives, Exclusives, Exclusives! Every E3 comes and goes and all we hear about is talk of exclusives. E3 2014 was no different. Sony’s stage presentation included tons of exclusive content for PS4 users and Playstation Plus members. Microsoft’s stage presentation included less exclusive content, but many more exclusive games. What people seem to forget about Nintendo however, is even though they have less third party support then their competition, their platforms are bombarded with exclusives. This has continued to make Nintendo a staple in the gaming industry for over three decades. And they reminded everyone about this once again with their extremely impressive lineup at E3 2014. For the second year in a row Nintendo opted out of doing a stage presentation and instead did a Video Digital Event. The Wii U is the black sheep of the next-gen systems and sales have struggled since the release in 2012. Mario Kart 8 started off Nintendo’s summer well and Smash Bros is being released this fall, but not much else was expected from Nintendo at the E3 2014. Well everyone was dead wrong! Nintendo’s Digital Event introduced title after title of must have games coming this holiday season and early 2015 only for the Wii U. Will this Holiday belong to Nintendo? Only time will tell, but I for one can’t wait to get my hands on these exciting titles. Nintendo started their Digital Event with Super Smash Bros which just keeps getting better and better. Mii Fighters was introduced including 3 different classes and a combined total of 36 special abilities. Super Smash Bros is taking steps to becoming a staple in the fighting game community for countless more years to come. Even though we were hoping for a few more character announcements we at least got one with Palutena. Nintendo has obviously been listening to the fans and professional Smash players due to the introduction of a Wii U adaptor that allows the use of the GCU controller with the Wii U. This has been met with extreme praise from fans of Smash and the FGC. Captain Toad: Treasure Trackers was another exclusive that looked fantastic and in the same vein as Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine which without a doubt will be of the same quality. The video then switched to a beautiful rendition of Hyrule. The Legend of Zelda has always been one of Nintendo’s premier titles and the Wii U version looks epic. With a new open world mechanic it looks like maybe a fresh look at Zelda that fans have wanted for years.
Miyamoto came on the video next and announced that he personally is working on three different Nintendo exclusive titles that make use of the Wii U gamepad in a completely new way. A new Star Fox game was one of these titles. The new Star Fox game uses the gamepad screen as a cockpit which includes many new gameplay options for this upcoming title in 2015. I am sure more of this will be revealed at E3. And then a Wii U exclusive that everyone has been waiting for since the release of the system came on screen. Bayonetta 2 was picked up by Nintendo after being dropped by its other publisher many years ago. Bayonetta’s trailer was amazing and not only does it include the original Bayonetta on disc, but also Nintendo has included a way to unlock Samus’ costume (from Metroid if you have been living under a rock) for the heroine. Fan Service at its best. If this wasn’t enough Xenoblade Chronicles X, Splatoon, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mario Party 10, and Devil’s Third from Ninja Gaiden Director Tomonobu Itagaki were also announced as Wii U exclusives. If Nintendo was doing a Live Stage Presentation I believe at this point they would have just dropped the mic and walked off stage to a roaring crowd of fans. You want exclusives for E3 2014? Well look no further Nintendo’s got them in spades. So even though you won’t be playing the new Call of Duty or Destiny on your Wii U this holiday season, there are still countless of reasons that Nintendo gave gamers today to run to the store and pick up their Wii U.
