Will Evolve by 2K Games Be A Disappointment
2014 will go down in gaming history as the year of disappointments and rushed titles. Even the next-gen consoles were rushed and have needed constant patches since there release last holiday season. Very few games have lived up to the hype that have been placed on them and many games have been released unplayable on Day One. Evolve by 2K Games is one of the most anticipated titles in the 2015 lineup and won countless awards during E3 this year. Players were given a sneak peak of what the final product will look like with an alpha test weekend last month. After playing the alpha test I became quickly underwhelmed and began to doubt whether Evolve will just be another overhyped next-gen title.
I am a big fan of 2K Games and love their work. XCOM was such a well done game and in a world of FPS titles they were able to create one that separated itself from the pack. I have been very excited to see 2K Games’ first major title on the next-gen consoles (sports games excluded). I really want to like this title, but it seems like it will be more of a gimmick game and not something that is going to be worth the $59.99. I like the eerie feeling in game and the ability to change classes during the encounters, but overall the game just isn’t a lot of fun.
I believe the real appeal that has carried this game so far is the originality behind the premise of the game. Let’s get a striketeam of four with varied classes and put them against a human controlled monster. This is a fun idea and something that hasn’t been done before and it really works at first. Unfortunately, this highly advanced version of cat and mouse gets a little old after the first couple rounds. I can see though how this game would be fun with a solid group of five friends, but for casual gamers I don’t see the lasting appeal. This game takes a lot of teamwork and communication and playing with random pugs is going to become tedious and frustrating.
Really I just want a little more from this game. The gameplay becomes stale quickly and even though I am only basing this off the alpha there is no soundtrack to speak of whatsoever. I am not sure if this is going to be something that is added later on, but with no soundtrack during the hunt makes the gameplay even more slow and monotonous. I would love to see a soundtrack like in Destiny or Warlords of Draenor. Especially during the serious monster fights during stage three.
Hopefully, 2K Games will take their feedback from the alpha test to heart and add a few more bells and whistles to this title to help it live up to its potential. The load times in this games really need to be addressed as well. The amount of time between matches is way too long for a next generation system. Like I said before this game does have potential and hopefully Evolve by 2K Games will reflect this titles intended vision upon its release in 2015. 2K Games has not revealed any information about whether or not a beta will be released on consoles. Maybe more information about this will be revealed during the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas on December 6th.
