The A Team for the Northern California Fight Club League
After three rounds of intense competition, the Northern California Fight Club League has finally come to a close. Throughout the weeks of play, we saw many dramatic battles and nail biting matches that kept us all on the edge of our seats. The competitors played with all their hearts and gave it their all and in the end 5 were crowned the “A” tier of NorCal. Let’s take a look back at all the excitement that was the Northern California Fight Club League!
The introductory round held at Milpitas Golfland set the pace for the entire league. Knowing how important it is to get off to a strong start, the competitors came sprinting out of the gate, holding no punches. Amazing plays highlighted by Kelvin’s relentless Hugo, BJunchained’s fear inducing Cody, Dirty Paws super solid Hakan, MMG | Julio’s unforgiving Yun, and pH | Hoodaman’s punishing Honda and Decapre set the tone for round 1. Capped off by the incredible play by EG Ricky Ortiz, round 1 featured hype that would be hard to match in the rounds to come. Round 1 also exposed some of the competitors struggle. Players such as pH | LPN, Crackfiend and MMG | El Cubano Loco had lackluster performances and saw themselves suffering an early deficit. At the end of the night, Ricky took a comfortable lead in the standings with Hoodaman coming in 2nd, Julio in 3rd, Kelvin in 4th, and BJunchained rounding out the top 5 in 5th place. While these players looked to round 2 to try to add to their leads, the rest of the competitors sitting out of the top 5 were forced to step their game up in the next round.
Round 2 of the Northern California Fight Club League took the action to the East Bay at the M.A.D.E. in Oakland. For the competitors, this round was truly a make-or-break round as we saw some of the players position themselves to hopefully solidify their spot in the top 5 and some who were all but eliminated from being able to qualify for the “A” tier. As the 2nd stage of the fighting games began, there was definitely an intense feeling in the air. The players knew what was at stake and strived to prove themselves in this round. High tension rematches from round 1 highlighted the evening of play as all competitors aimed to better their position in the standings. Ricky, Julio, Hoodaman, and Kelvin continued their strong play while BJunchained slipped up and fell in the standings. LPN and El Cubano Loco were able to shake off their rust from round 1 and post up impressive performances which really helped their overall standing, but it was the play by the up and comer Nando that stole the show. Nando’s performance which saw him nearly lose to Ricky was enough to boost him from the bottom of the standings to just shouting distance from the top 5! As the round drew to a close, the overall standings showed LPN jumping all the way into 5th, knocking BJunchained out from the top 5 position he gained from the first round of competition. Consistent play helped Kelvin maintain his 4th place positioning while Julio leapt over Hoodman for the 2nd place spot leaving Hoodaman in 3rd. However, Ricky continued her dominance, staying perfect after 2 rounds of play and not only retaining the 1st place position, but gaining a stranglehold on the top spot with only 1 round of competition left!
For the fighting games finale, the league shifted to the beautiful city of San Francisco. Being the competitors’ last chances to prove that they deserved to be in the “A” tier of NorCal, there was no more time to waste. Everyone came to play and definitely left it all out on the field. Would BJunchained be able to bounce back and regain his spot in the top 5? Would young Nando continue his great play and propel himself into the elite of the Northern California Fight Club League? Would Ricky finally lose? With all these questions left to be answered, round 3 was definitely shaping up to be an amazing end to the league. This was it! All or nothing time! Round 3 did not disappoint! The night of fighting games started off with a bang with an incredibly close match between Nando and BJunchained. Nando was able to nearly defeat BJunchained and hoped to carry the momentum he gained from this victory to the rest of his matches. Unfortunately, Nando’s performance fell as the night grew and his chances of making the top 5 slipped away. After his loss to Nando, the pressure was definitely on BJunchained to step his game up. Meanwhile, LPN and Kelvin were mixed in a heated battle for the 4th spot. Neither seemed as if they would budge, but LPN would eventually edge Kelvin out and gain the 4th spot leaving Kelvin in 5th. The battle would then shift to Kelvin and BJunchained for the 5th spot as well as to Hoodaman and Julio for the 2nd place spot. As the round and the league altogether came to an end, Julio’s continued excellence pushed him into a clear lead in 2nd place while Hoodaman’s disappointing round ended with him no longer able to reach Julio for the 2nd spot, but still retaining 3rd place. The fight for the 5th and final spot in the “A” tier went down to the wire with Kelvin barely beating out BJunchained. All the while, Ricky Ortiz maintained her ownage of the league, finishing off her perfect campaign in the Northern California Fight Club League. Flawless victory!
When all was said and done, NorCal had its “A” team. Although only 5 will be awarded this honor, all of the competitors (BJunchained, MMG | El Cubano Loco, Crackfiend, Nando, Ramin, Nima, Crizzle, Dirty Paws, and Filipino Champ) should be commended for their amazing play and tremendous heart for fighting games throughout the entirety of the league. You all put on one hell of a show and your performances will no doubt make you stronger in the future. So that wraps it up for the first season of the Northern California Fight Club League!
