Playstation Now Beta Comes to PS4
The private beta for Playstation 3 has been up since the beginning of this year and Sony claims that over 50,000 hours of gameplay have been logged by testers so far. Sony announced today that it will be releasing PS Now to the Playstation 4 on May 20th. They also announced that they will be expanding their PS3 beta user base for Playstation Now during the coming months as well. Playstation Now is going to be one of the first and largest streaming services for video games. Console and PC gamers alike have been using emulators for years on their computers.
But, this will be the first streaming service on consoles and will be a feature that will definitely be mimicked by Microsoft and Nintendo in due time. PS Now currently offers a select number of Playstation 3 games, but there are plans in the future to release PSX and PS2 games and the possibility of being able to rent games as well. PS Now will be talked about during Sony’s presentation at E3 in June and since Sony plans on releasing this service to the public sometime later this year I am sure pricing and more news on PSX and
PS2 compatibility will be explained then.
Many publishers and developers believe that streaming is the future of gaming distribution. Digital Downloads of games have dramatically increased since the release of the next-gen systems. (I personally just bought my first game disc for my next-gen system today). Gamestop has reported a significant drop in game disc sales and with streaming services and digital downloads on the rise this is bound to continue. Less game disc sales means less used games for Gamestop to sell. Unfortunately, used games is where video game retail stores actually make their money. Therefore, this brings up the question as to whether or not Gamestop will eventually become the next Blockbuster Video? So while Playstation Now is exciting for gamers and Playstation 4 owners it is not good news for Gamestop.
Let us know in the comments below what you think about streaming service or digital downloads vs game discs.
