Even with Project Morpheus still being relatively unknown, it is widely known that Oculus VR plans to release their Oculus Rift headset into the PC market in the near future. This makes developers and gamers alike wonder what the next-gen consoles have planned in terms of virtual reality. There have been recent rumors that Microsoft has secretly been planning their own VR headset to work with the Kinect. Hopefully more of that will be unveiled at E3, but for now, these are just rumors
On the other hand, Sony has been working on their own VR headset for the PS4 called Project Morpheus since 2010. Project Morpheus is designed to work with the Playstation Move motion controllers and is supposed to be very accurate. This came as no surprise to Oculus who has known what Sony was producing. Both had plans to integrate into the VR community together. With Facebook’s acquisition of the Oculus Rift earlier this year it only helps Sony by validating the relevancy of virtual reality technology. Thus, making it a legitimate inception into the consumer gaming market.
Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida upon hearing of the Facebook acquisition, explained in an interview that he was excited about the news. “…I was like, yeah! For me it was a validation for VR.” With the Oculus DK2 being released in July the future of Oculus and virtual reality in general seems very promising. “Mark [Zuckerberg] said he believes VR can be the next platform after mobile, “ Yoshida said. “That’s big thinking and kind of excited our thinking.”
Sony doesn’t have a release date for the Morpheus but it seems to be moving ahead quickly. With the next-gen systems being less than six months old this E3 should prove very exciting for console gamers. Will Microsoft stay quiet about their VR plans and play catch up in this next facet of gaming? Will Sony set a release date for Project Morpheus?
