Titanfall Frontiers Edge Brings More Updates
Titanfall last week released its second DLC, Frontiers Edge, which is included with the season pass. If you are not a season pass holder for Titanfall Frontiers Edge, it can be purchased for $9.99 + tax from the Microsoft Store. This Map Pack also includes the fifth major update to Titanfall since its release earlier this year. This update includes many new features to increase re-playability as well as three new maps: Export, Dig Site, and Haven. The new maps are very urban in nature and have many new quality sniper positions while keeping to Titanfall’s run and gun play style. The new maps can be played separately in a variety pack or attrition game mode and are included in select game modes with all the other maps as well. Including the new maps in the normal rotation was also available in the last DLC (Expedition) and proof of how Respawn Entertainment is honoring its pledge to always be listening to the Titanfall community. However, as enjoyable as the maps in Titanfall Frontiers Edge are, they do not match the diversity or innovation of the last DLC map pack, Expedition. Swampland alone gave players the ability to fully push the game mechanics unique to Titanfall to the next level. It gave gamers the ability to hop from tree after tree until finally pouncing on their opponent like a hawk snatching its prey and Frontiers Edge lacks this intensity.
Regardless of any of this, the fact is, that everyone wants new maps and for $9.99 if you are still playing Titanfall at this point you are going to pay the cash for the new content. However, beyond the maps the majority of the new features are included in the pregame menus. This includes more un-lockables with the addition of new insignias that can be purchased from the in-game black market that was also added with this patch. In-game currency can now be earned in addition to experience. This enables players to purchase insignias and packs of burn cards. Burn cards now, instead of just being discarded, are sold for currency on the black market. It is possible to customize burn card decks and stack them with certain cards to complement your gameplay.
Now with this being said these two features even though new, are trivial at best, because the average player always has way more burn cards than necessary. This makes the need to purchase more irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Also, Respawn really missed the mark with the whole insignia thing. I have to believe that this inclusion to the game was spawned from players asking to be able to customize the colors and decals for their titan’s. Respawn Entertainment responded early after release and suggested that this customization feature would be included soon. This insignia addition is not what the players meant. They don’t want lame decals they want purple and blue titans. You are not able to see the insignia on your titan while in combat and it only appears next to your titan’s name in the selection screen. So even though players have nothing else to really buy from the black market besides insignias there is no real motivation to do so.
A feature that did not involve the black market is the addition of daily challenges. Daily challenges give you experience and currency that are refreshed every three days allowing you to hold nine at a time. This is a great way of keeping the community busy by giving them new challenges to strive for during combat. It has been fun seeing players use a variety of weapons and different titan classes because everyone is doing their dailies. Just the other day arc mines were the daily and it changed the way the match was played because arc mines were scattered all over the ground for a change.
So are all these changes enough to make Titanfall Frontiers Edge a viable DLC even though Destiny is around the corner? Probably not, but from someone who loves Titanfall and really appreciates Respawn’s commitment to the fans and the franchise I was happy with the DLC. In the end, if you are a fan of Titanfall you will enjoy the DLC, however, if you think Titanfall Frontiers Edge is the expansion you have been waiting for to bring you back to the game you are better off saving the ten bucks.
