USF4 Omega Mode Annouced
Capcom has two major patches coming to Ultra Street Fighter IV in the coming months. In October players will be seeing patch 1.04. Very few details have been revealed about Ultra’s first major character balancing patch and no patch notes are available. What we do know is that delayed wake-ups have been added to training mode and Capcom is finally addressing connectivity issues that have been hindering PC players since its release.
Another free DLC update will be released before the end of the year, however no official release date has been revealed at this time. In a blog post by Peter “Combofiend” Rosas, Capcom announced a brand new mode being brought to the game and that’s the USF4 Omega Mode. This new mode changes every character’s normal and special attacks modifying the entire feel of the game. A video was posted by Mr. Rosas in which he explains some of the changes and showcases some of the new combos available for Chun-Li, Dhalsim, Guile, and Ken.
USF4 Omega Mode will be available for online matches, but only in unranked ones. It was also stated that this mode will not be playable in official Capcom tournaments including the Capcom Pro Tour. These tournaments will continue to use the Ultra character balancing which means it is safe to assume that the rest of the FGC will follow suit. “As the primary goal for this mode was fun, we placed more emphasis on making the characters feel new, than on their balance. This means that strong, fan favorite attacks such as Ken’s Shinppu Jinrai Kyaku and Sagat’s Tiger Raid make their return while other characters such as Zangief gain new abilities, like being able to combo into his command throws,” Capcom explained in their blog post. Even though Capcom means for this mode to be fun it seem as though “making the characters feel new” should have been the focus of Ultra Street Fighter IV to begin with. Even with the overhaul in Ultra the game still came out feeling a lot like its predecessor with not enough changes to make it feel like a new game. But, if it was this easy to give all the characters entirely new moves then Capcom should have given the fans more serious changes instead of releasing USF4 Omega Mode.
Regardless, based on what is provided in the video it will be a lot of fun to check out the new changes in Omega Mode even if it’s just for casuals. I can imagine that we will definitely see some side tournaments at some of the major FGC events in the future and the combo exhibitions are going to be intense at Evo next year.
