Valkyria Chronicles Steam Release Outsells The Competition
Among the new releases on November 11th including heavy hitters from Ubisoft and Microsoft Studios was Valkyria Chronicles. This title released by Sega in 2008 for the PS3 was a strategy JRPG sleeper hit that was praised for its storytelling, but never received the attention that it deserved. After the Valkyria Chronicles Steam release yesterday, it’s finally is receiving its due credit. The numbers are in and after the first 24 hours following its PC re-release Valkyria Chronicles was the number one selling game on the Steam download charts. This is quite the achievement since this rumors for this port to the PC only began a mere two weeks ago.
There are no additions to the gameplay and the version is a direct port of the PS3 classic. Valkyria Chronicles rendering process allows for this game to break away from some of the console limitations and is able to be run at a higher resolution than its PS3 counterpart. Also, instead of being locked at 30 frames a second this console port plays at a solid 60 FPS which is unusual for a slow paced game like a strategy RPG. And with very modest hardware requirements even a budget gaming PC will be able to play this game on high settings.
As far as controls, this game supports full gamepad support. A downside is that like many Japanese PC ports in the past there are only keyboard controls. It proves to be only a minor nuisance, however, since this game is built around menus. The keyboard controls are fast and work well with the in-game menus and the key bindings are perfectly placed. After a few hours of gameplay the keyboard only control scheme seemed natural and your hand stops looking for the mouse.
A well-built story wins again as Valkyria Chronicles Steam release continues to shine as one of the best strategy JRPGs of all time. Everything you loved about the classic is intact and it transfers perfectly to the PC, which has always been a concern with console ports. Bringing this PS3 sleeper hit to the PC allows it to be experienced by a broader audience and with its impressive sales maybe we will see talks of a sequel, but until then we can just watch and enjoy as the Valkyria Chronicles Steam release outshines the competition.
