Xbox One June Update Revealed
The Xbox One June update scheduled for mid-June was announced today right on the heels of their May 14th update which included new volume controls among other improvements. While many expected the Xbox One June update to primarily feature the improvements to Games With Gold, many more features to the firmware will be taking place as well.
As it was rumored last month, this patch allows for the use of an external hard drive for storage. The hard drive has to be USB 3.0 compatible and a minimum of 256GB to be used with the Xbox One. This is a huge feature for the console, especially since the operating system for the Xbox One uses approximately 140GB, making the usable space of the 500GB hard drive to only allow 360GB for games and media. This sounds like enough space, but with games like Forza 5, taking 36.5GB, and after installing Wolfenstein: The New Order, taking 46.5GB (and that’s with the disc), 360GB is not going to cut it. And who knows how much HD space flagship titles like Halo or Mass Effect will take in the years to come.
Not only will the extra storage be appreciated, but the external hard drive feature will also allow you to store your digital downloads and play them on other Xbox One consoles. You will have to sign into your own Xbox Live Gold account to play them on another system. This is a great feature and something Microsoft wanted to do initially before their 180 after E3 last year. This is a feature that is not available on the PS4 and makes the Xbox One a little more like a PC gamers machine where all your addicting video games are downloaded on the hard drive and can be played on other systems.
Besides HD support, the Xbox One June update will feature Real Name support for friend notifications. Now you will be able to see the list of your Xbox Live friends by their real names instead of their gamer tags. This is a feature that has been available on PS4 and many other online gaming services such as Battle.net. However, if you are more of a casual gamer or don’t want players to know your real name you are able to turn that feature off.
SmartGlass features have once again been rolled into this update and bring a few new features including a universal remote to control your TV and DVR. While this is not the biggest feature, however, it is very convenient when you are missing the remote or if you no longer want to hassle with the million remotes on your coffee table anymore. Also included in the Xbox One June update is an auto sign-in feature which will come in handy for the all the Kinect-less Xbox One users.
