Xbox One Update
The latest Xbox One update rolled out today offering a number of new features to improve the operating system. One of the biggest features is a new sound mixer which allows you to adjust the sound levels on your snapped apps. This way you can adjust the volume on Xbox Music and other apps while you are playing games. This is a feature that PC gamers have been able to enjoy for years by having music playing in the background while gaming or even watching your favorite movie or anime while your video game is open. Skype was also added to the snap apps list allowing you to play games or watch sports while on Skype with your friends. This was advertised as a working feature for the Xbox One when it was released, but until now has it been unavailable. Volume controls have been added as well with the update for when you are using Kinect for chats. This feature will also help when using Skype as a snap app.
In addition to the new features that were added, Microsoft also put in an option which lets you opt-in to a speech data collection program. It is turned off of course (hence the opt-in) and Microsoft claims that it is for voice data purposes and purely for improving the Xbox One. However, since Microsoft already knows our voice commands, it is hard to not see this as a marketing tool. You can turn this feature on in the Settings menu under Customizing Privacy and Online Safety.
Xbox One system updates have been rolling out frequently since the consoles release in November. It is nice to see Microsoft focusing so much effort to address the Xbox One community and supporting their OS. The next Xbox One update is scheduled as early as June and will introduce the Games With Gold feature that was announced. With a new Xbox One update coming so soon after this current one it is unlikely that we will see many new features in the June update. But since Games With Gold has been one of the largest requested features by Xbox One users, it should suffice.
